COVID Catch Up

I tested positive for COVID last week, so it was a week of confinement for me.  Fortunately, after the first couple of days, I felt good enough to at least get some challenges and miscellaneous scrapping done.

His Sunset

Journaling reads:  Driving home one evening after church on a Wednesday night, I caught a glimpse of this beautiful sunset out the front window of the car.  I had to wait for a clearing in the horizon for this picture.  What a beautiful picture from the western sky!  Thank You, Lord, for making Your glory known in the beauty of Your creation!   7/19/23

“The skies proclaim the work of His hands.”  Psalm 19:1b NIV

I used a wooden paper, topped with a shabby solid paper, topped with a pattern paper and then layered another shabby solid paper on top using the overlay blend mode.  This gave me a color closer to the orange in the sunset.

I changed the hue and saturation of the color of the bow.

I used one of the paint elements as the photo mask.

Big Bad John

Done for the Songs We Love Designer Challenge found here:  https://oscraps.com/community/threads/%E2%99%A5-songs-we-love-%E2%99%A5-challenge-with-joyful-heart-designs-august-2023.38101/

Journaling reads:  I remember mom and dad playing this 45 record a lot when I was 7 or 8.  They listened to it so often that I had the whole song memorized at one time!

”Big Bad John" is a country song originally performed by Jimmy Dean, who wrote and composed it.  It was released in September 1961 and by the beginning of November it had gone to number 1 on the Billboard Hot 100. It won Dean the 1962 Grammy Award for Best Country & Western Recording, and was nominated for the Grammy Award for Song of the Year.  Big Bad John was also the title of a 1990 television movie starring Dean. The inspiration for the character of Big John was an actor, John Minto, whom Dean had met in a summer stock play, Destry Rides Again, who was 6'5" (195.6 cm). Dean would call him "Big John" and grew to like the rolling sound of the phrase.” ~Wikipedia

Song Lyrics:

Every mornin' at the mine you could see him arrive

He stood six-foot-six and weighed two-forty-five

Kinda broad at the shoulder and narrow at the hip

And everybody knew ya didn't give no lip to big John

(Big John, big John)

Big bad John (big John)

Nobody seemed to know where John called home

He just drifted into town and stayed all alone

He didn't say much, kinda quiet and shy

And if you spoke at all, you just said, "Hi" to Big John

Somebody said he came from New Orleans

Where he got in a fight over a Cajun Queen

And a crashin' blow from a huge right hand

Sent a Louisiana fellow to the promised land, big John

(Big John, big John)

Big bad John (big John)

Then came the day at the bottom of the mine

When a timber cracked and men started cryin'

Miners were prayin' and hearts beat fast

And everybody thought that they'd breathed their last, 'cept John

Through the dust and the smoke of this man-made hell

Walked a giant of a man that the miners knew well

Grabbed a saggin' timber, gave out with a groan

And like a giant oak tree he just stood there alone, big John

(Big John, big John)

Big bad John (big John)

And with all of his strength he gave a mighty shove

Then a miner yelled out, "There's a light up above"

And twenty men scrambled from a would-be grave

Now there's only one left down there to save, big John

With jacks and timbers they started back down

Then came that rumble way down in the ground

And then smoke and gas belched out of that mine

Everybody knew it was the end of the line for big John

(Big John, big John)

Big bad John (big John)

Now, they never reopened that worthless pit

They just placed a marble stand in front of it

These few words are written on that stand

At the bottom of this mine lies a big, big man

Big John

(Big John, big John)

Big bad John (big John)

(Big John) big bad John

Don’t Quit!

Done for the Lynn Grieveson Featured Product Challenge found here:  https://oscraps.com/community/threads/2023-08-lynn-grieveson-august-2023-featured-product-challenge.38113/

Journaling reads:  Do you ever feel like giving up on life?

Do you ever ask the question, “Why?”

Do you ever say, “What’s the use?”

Do you ever get sick and tired of being sick and tired?

When I am feeling this way I have to remind myself that I am not alone in my distresses.  The Lord has promised that He will never leave me or forsake me (Deuteronomy 31:8b).  I believe that, even though this was a promise given to Joshua, it applies to me, too!  Hebrews 13:5 says, “Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have, because God has said, “Never will I leave you; never will I forsake you.”  The next verse, Hebrews 13:6 says, “So we say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid. What can mere mortals do to me?”  I need to trust Psalm 55:22, “Cast your cares on the LORD and he will sustain you; he will never let the righteous be shaken.”  “And I know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose.”  Romans 8:28

“I can do ALL things through Christ who gives me strength.”  Philippians 4:13

In the Good Old Summer Time

Done for the August Momma O’s Challenge found here:  https://oscraps.com/community/threads/vicki-stegall-designs-momma-os-august-challenge.38011/

Journaling reads:

In the Good Old Summer Time (edited lyrics by me)

In the good old summertime

In the good old summertime

Keepin’ cool in our shaded pool

With cousins that are mine

We thrash and splash the whole day long

We have such a good, good time

And that's a very good sign

That we’re keepin’ our cool in the shaded pool

In the good old summertime

A New Beginning

Done for the Vicki Robinson August Designer challenge found here:  https://oscraps.com/community/threads/2023-08-vicki-robinson-august-challenge.38128/

Journaling reads:  The whole unit of three was split today as Ryan and Abby begin another school year without their big sister, Hannah.  Hannah now has an adult job in an adult world after graduating this year from high school.  I wonder how they all feel about this new phase of life as they get older and begin to leave their childhood behind.  I don’t have to ask how mom and dad feel about this.....I know first hand it is not easy to release your kids into the world.  And even though it gets easier as each one grows up and moves on into adulthood, as a parent you never leave that role.  But that’s the way it is.  8/14/23

I put the pink flower on the right by itself to represent Hannah.  The pink and blue flower next to the picture represents Abby and Ryan.  The 3 butterflies near the top represent all 3 flying away into the adult world.

I changed the hue and saturation of the bg paper to give it more blue.

More grows in the garden than the gardener sows.

– Spanish proverb

I decided to not plant any vegetables this year in my boxes, yet we have more tomatoes from volunteer plants than we had last year from the ones I planted!

The goldfinches LOVE eating the seeds from the sunflowers I planted a couple of years ago!  And I love watching the flowers sway under the weight of the birds.

Since the steps are broken, Asher had to run around the side of the house to get back onto the deck.  He could jump down but it was too high for him to jump back up.

Abby spent the week with us when Hannah and Ryan went to the Arise Bible Conference in Tennessee.  We played lots of games and enjoyed her being with us.

Ilene spent 3 weeks in WV.    We got together for lunch and went to Carolyn’s to play games when she got back.

I made lots of salsa out of the tomatoes that were coming on like crazy.  We took lots of the cherry and husky cherry tomatoes to the people at church.  Little Ellie LOVES cherry tomatoes!
