Liliturf

Liliturf

Journaling reads:  Mark saw this cluster of flowers when he cut grass but he did not cut them down so I could take pictures of them.  I searched for a long time before I decided they must be Liriope.  Liriope is a genus of low, grass-like flowering plants from East and Southeast Asia. Some species are often used in landscaping in temperate latitudes. It may be called lilyturf in North America, although it is neither a true grass nor a lily.

I created the background by placing a dark paper on the bottom, a lighter paper on top of the bottom one and giving it a Vivid light blend mode.  Then I placed a 3rd paper on top using the Saturation blend mode.  I was trying to get a purple close to that of the photo.

Helen's Flower

Helen’s Flower

Helenium amarum - Bitterweed, Bitter Sneezeweed, Yellowdicks, Spanish Daisy, American Sneezeweed.  Common weed found in meadows, along roadsides, and other disturbed areas.  Some authorities consider it to be weedy or invasive.  If cows eat them their milk will have a bitter taste.  This plant is a native of the United States.  They are in the Asteraceae (Aster) family.

Bitterweed's yellow blossom is a typical aster with a cluster of disk flowers and separate ray flowers. H. amarum typically has five to ten ray flowers hanging down from the dome-shaped disk.

This is var. amarum, which is the more widespread of the two Helenium amarum varieties. The other variety, var. badium has a brown central disk, and is found only in Oklahoma, Texas, and South Carolina.

Captured

Journaling reads:  Sometimes we ride our bikes to a restaurant on Sunday afternoon with our good friends from church.  However, rain was in the forecast today, so we opted to drive.  We went to Ruby Tuesday for their steak special.  After spending a good hour talking and eating inside, we talked for another hour outside enjoying the fellowship.  It only sprinkled a few drops.

I used 2 papers and used the Pin Light blend mode on the top paper so some of the pink from the bottom paper came through on the right.  From the template, I used every element but a couple and applied papers to the painted areas behind the photo, which you really cannot see much of after adding the cluster.

Storms of Life

Storms of Life

Journaling reads:

When the raging winds and tempest,
And the noxious clouds of sin,
Whirl around me like an army,
And my faith is wearing thin,
In a whispering distant thunder,
Comes a voice like morning calm:
“Fear not, I am with you ever,
Till the world shall see its end.”

Richard W. Adams

I blended my photo into the background paper using Linear Burn blending mode.  I added other stamps and elements between the photo and background.  The white elements are on top of my photo.

Gabriel's Already Standing

Our pastor mentioned this song in the Sunday service last week. When I got home I searched for it on the internet. I wrote the lyrics down and it inspired me to do a page that represents God motioning to the Archangel Gabriel that it is time to blow the trumpet signalling the return of Christ who will break through the Eastern sky!

Gabriel’s Already Standing

Song by Lonesome River Band

Lyrics:

Gabriel’s already standing,

Gabriel’s already standing…….

Earthquakes, rumors of war

We’re closer than we ever have been before

He told us in Matthew 24

When you see these things you’ll know

Gabriel’s already standing.

Angels are waiting with a mighty band

Gabriel’s standing with a trumpet in his hand

Waiting on the Lord’s command.

Look up, brother, the time is nigh

It’s all going to happen in the blink of an eye

When Jesus splits that Eastern sky

The saints go marching in

Gabriel’s already standing

Angels are waiting with a mighty band

Gabriel’s standing with a trumpet in his hand

Waiting on the Lord’s command.

Wake up sinner we’re short on time

Just open your eyes and see the signs

You don’t want to be one left behind

When you hear that trumpet blow

Gabriel’s already standing

Angels are waiting with a mighty band

Gabriel’s standing with a trumpet in his hand

Oh, Gabriel’s already standing.

Angels are waiting with a mighty band

Gabriel’s standing with a trumpet in his hand

Just waiting on the Lord’s command.

I don’t know if angels have wings.  The Bible does mention the cherubim having wings, but I don’t know what type of beings they are.  But I think they are different from the angels that do God’s bidding.

Matthew 24:30, 31, 36, 42

And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory…  And he shall send his angels with a great sound of a trumpet, and they shall gather together his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other…  But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no, not the angels of heaven, but my Father only…  Watch therefore: for ye know not what hour your Lord doth come.

Cat Nights Begin

A "Just for Fun" Page

Journaling reads:  Cat Nights begin on August 17. This term harks back to the days when people believed in witches. A rather obscure old Irish legend said that a witch could turn herself into a cat eight times, but on the ninth time (August 17), she couldn’t regain her human form. This bit of folklore also gives us the saying, “A cat has nine lives.” Because August is a yowly time for cats, this may have prompted the speculation about witches on the prowl in the first place. Also, nights continue to get longer. Cats, crepuscular creatures, are nocturnal hunters. Their superior night vision means that the nights belong to them.

Taken from almanac.com

I blended a paper from each kit to create the background, adding paint elements in between the layers.  And I blended the Pixabay image into the background.  I copied a portion of the cat’s ear and placed it on top of the hat so it would appear to be coming through the hat.

Journaling reads:  Jessica came down with the kids for one last visit before time for a new school year to begin.  She spent the weekend at her sister’s home since I was still recouping from a rough case of COVID.  When she checked to see if the weekend was a good time to come I told her yes, as long as I didn’t have to do anything!  Thankfully, Elisabeth was able to accommodate Jessica and the kids.  Mark and I went over for a couple of the meals and played games and watched TV or just sat around and chatted.  The kids played games with us, too, but mostly just hung out together.  It was a good weekend of pampering for me and just visiting with my girls and grandchildren!                                8/5 - 8/7/22

NC State Butterfly

Eastern Tiger Swallowtail

Journaling reads: Mark found the injured butterfly by the road, figuring a car hit it. We tried to save it, but it didn't survive. I thought it interesting that the underside of the butterfly is actually a bit more patterned and colorful than the upperside.

State Butterfly of North Carolina: Eastern Tiger Swallowtail

by Michelle Czaikowski Underhill and Amy Kemp
NC Government & Heritage Library, 2017.

The North Carolina General Assembly designated the Eastern tiger swallowtail (Papilio glaucus) as the official State butterfly of the State of North Carolina. The bill was ratified on June 11, 2012 and approved on June 15, 2012.

Selection as the State Butterfly

The Eastern Tiger Swallowtail was selected because it can be found in all 100 counties of North Carolina and is easy to locate and recognize.

About twenty-eight other states either have official state butterflies or have butterflies as their official state insect. Delaware, Georgia, South Carolina, and Virginia all either have the Eastern tiger swallowtail as their official state butterfly or as their official state insect.

About the Eastern Tiger Swallowtail

Eastern Tiger Swallowtails are yellow with black stripes, and have a wingspan of three to six inches. They can be found in many habitats, including woods, fields, near rivers and creeks, or in gardens. The butterfly larvae eat leaves, while adults eat flower nectar.

The female Eastern Tiger Swallowtail will lay single green eggs on leaves, which then hatch into caterpillars. The Caterpillars are brown and white when they are young, but as they grow they turn green with orange and black false eyespots. These spots fool predators into thinking the caterpillar is much larger than it truly is.

The Eastern tiger swallowtail is native to North America and is generally considered the first North American butterfly to have been drawn. The first drawing of it was by John White. White was an artist, cartographer, and is also known as the governor of the Roanoke Island colony that came to be known as the "Lost Colony."

Dying Embers

Journaling reads:
On the coldest nights
I'll look for your glow
among the burning embers
of your fiery soul.
I'll sift through the ashes
in search of the spark
that ignited my mind
and lit up my heart.
Christy Ann Martine

This is a deserted homestead I took a picture of while on one of our bike rides. It always makes me wonder what stories old, deserted homes could tell if they could talk. I think of the burning embers in the poem as being life for the old house and the house is waiting for someone to sift through the ashes in search of just a small spark that would bring life back into it!

Journaling reads:  I got these beautiful red flowers from our granddaughter.  She and her classmates were selling flower and vegetable plants as a school project.  The marigolds I know, but the other flower I do not know the name of.  I put all 6 plants in one pot and it did very well as long as I kept it watered.  But thoughts of watering went out the window when my husband and I got sick a couple of weeks ago.  So, they are no longer very pretty.  I don’t know that I can even bring them back from their disparaging looks at this point.  But at least I have some photos to remember them by.

Journaling reads:  Family.....the most important unit in life we are blessed with.  It is a fascinating journey of unique individuals brought together by the greatest of all fathers, our heavenly Father, the LORD God Almighty!  Each body adding its special talents to the collective whole.  Just the right sassiness, spunk and quirkiness.  The right amount of brain, brawn and beauty.  Each and every one growing and maturing into the individual the LORD has purposed to complete His plan for our good and His glory!  Family.....I love you to the moon and back and back again!

We gathered for Memorial Day weekend, 2022.  My sister, Kim, came to spend the week with me.  When that happens, my kids and families come from near and far to gather for the weekend.  The weather was great and we were able to gather in the woods for the fun and games, food and fellowship all weekend.  We had a marvelous time together.  Alas, the weekend always comes to an abrupt stop as the time rolls around for everyone to go their separate ways and head back home.  Our times together are too few and far between!

Buffalo Heritage Days

Journaling reads:  (Most of this came from, “West Virginia: The state that said no” written by Preston Williams on April 12, 2011 for the Washington Post)

In 1861, leaders from northwestern Virginia established a new Virginia state government that remained loyal to the Union. This government then carved out territory to create a new Union state. On June 20, 1863, West Virginia became the 35th state - the only permanent change in territory due to the Civil War.  They were a state born for advocating for and defending the United States of America rather than the seceded states of America. Western Virginians were very committed to the Union in a state that left the Union.

After Virginia voted to secede from the Union, Western Virginia delegates, two-thirds of whom had voted against secession, gathered in Clarksburg and later Wheeling and decided to carve out their own territory and create “a new Virginia.”

“People of North Western Virginia, why should we thus permit ourselves to be tyrannized over, and made slaves of, by the haughty arrogance and wicked machinations of would-be Eastern Despots,” asked a committee of Western Virginia politicians in an open letter in the Kingwood Chronicle in May of 1861. “Are we submissionists, craven cowards, who will yield to daring ambition....The Union under the flag of our common country....causes our bosoms to glow with patriotic heat, and our hearts to swell with honest love of country.”

Jessica and Tim dressed and ready to attend the Buffalo, WV Heritage Days celebrations in 1998.  Tim borrowed his Union gear from a pastor friend, Chris Dumford, from Ohio.  This picture was taken in the church yard behind the Buffalo Baptist Church where Tim pastored from 1997 - 2008.
