Happy Birthday, Mom!

Happy Birthday, Mom!

Journaling reads:  Alice Winnebee Ryker Brandenburg, born January 29, 1934; the wonderful woman I had the privilege of calling “Mom”.  She would be 89 years old today if she were living.  I’m sure that she wouldn’t want to leave her eternal home just to celebrate an earthly birthday.  Especially since she lives in a land free of tears, heartache, pain, worries and troubles.  And I would not want her to leave that home for even one day of troubles in this earthly abode!

     I didn’t always think I was privileged to call her “mom”.  I didn’t like her rules.  But, I guess no kid likes rules; not until I became a mom and realized those rules were only for my good and because she loved me unconditionally!

     I’m so thankful my children were able to spend a week every summer with her.  I know they miss Grandma and Grandpa Brandenburg.  When I reminded them of her birthday today, they immediately began listing some of their memories they have of times spent with them:

Jessica:  Playing pickle outside with Davey then kickball with Uncle Joe (my brother) and hide-n-go-seek.  Slices of Colby cheese, the large roll ;)(we did not buy Colby cheese).  Terrible tea, popcorn after church and Tony’s pizzas and Murder She Wrote!

Michael:  I remember whipping you turkeys (his siblings, cousins and grandma) in Canasta.  Praying the pictures wouldn’t fall off the wall (as they played in the hall).  Frozen pizza after church.  If it’s yellow, let it mellow.

Elisabeth:  I’m thankful for the memories we have!  Potted meat and honey buns.  Bambi (their cousin always crawled around and pretended to be Bambi).  The Price is Right.

Nathanael:  “Vieeny weenies” and cheese crackers.  The blue room (one of the bedrooms).  Soaps, then Gilligan’s Island, Mash, Gomer Pyle, and Andy Griffith.  Wheel of Fortune.  Fudge.  Spearmint gum.  Hide and seek.  RC Cola.

     I asked Michael about his “if it’s yellow, let it mellow” comment.  He said, “they were stingy with the cistern water so we had to share bath water and not flush the toilet too often.”  To which Nathanael said, “when it’s brown, flush it down.”  I had to laugh!  That was definitely my parents!  They had to buy water, so they didn’t “waste” it, LOL!  I asked, “Did you fight about who got to take their bath first?”  Jessica said she always went first.  Michael had to go last since he was dirtiest!  HA!  I can believe that, too!

     The week the kids stayed at mom and dads they were also joined by their two cousins.  And I’m sure some of the neighborhood kids were thrown into the mix!  Thank you, Lord, for the blessings You have bestowed on my family throughout the many years of my life!  Thank You for Godly parents!

Christmas Decorations

AnnaLift Challenge found here:  https://oscraps.com/community/threads/annalift-challenge-01-13-23-01-27-23.36953/

Journaling reads:  No Christmas tree or outside lights as decorations.  Only some lights in the house in my jars and around my bird houses and other containers.  But my favorite decoration of all are the snowmen that glow blue with lights on the Christmas tree behind them.

Captured

Captured

Journaling reads:  It was wonderful to have Nat, Sam, and Adalina with us for our Christmas gathering this year!  We let him choose the date so he could be there.  This picture was taken at church before everyone left for home.  Michael and Jessica were already gone.  After church Nat headed home because he had to have Adalina back at her mom’s house that afternoon.  Jessica and family, Elisabeth and family, Mark and I went to Dairi-O for lunch.  It was so crowded that we had to eat outside at the picnic tables!  Fortunately they were in the sun so we were plenty warm!  What a great weekend!  Love my family!

Sleepless in North Carolina

Sleepless in North Carolina

Done for the Mixed Media Challenge #7 found here:  https://oscraps.com/community/threads/january-challenge-7-artsy-mixed-media.36843/

Journaling reads:  I cannot remember the last time I got 8 straight hours of sleep!  Even when I get 6 those hours are generally interrupted by the need for a bathroom break or to flop to the other side so I can give one hip or the other a rest.  I don’t do too much yawning during the day unless I am reading!

No Snow to Show......So Far!

No Snow to Show……So Far!

Done for the Seasonal Challenge #6 found here:  https://oscraps.com/community/threads/january-challenge-6-seasonal.36812/

Journaling reads:  It has been cold...It has been below freezing...It has rained...BUT there has been NO SNOW this winter...so far, anyway!  Really, it doesn’t hurt my feelings at all!  The only day I enjoy seeing snow during the winter is on Christmas!  I guess you could say that I dream of a white Christmas.

We had a cold spell here in NC during December, but for the most part it gets cold at night and warm during the day.  When the kids and grandkids gathered for our Christmas get-together on 1/13/23, it was chilly, but we got the group photo outside.

Felling Trees

Felling Trees

Done for the Tic Tac Toe Challenge #4 found here:  https://oscraps.com/community/threads/january-challenge-4-tic-tac-toe-challenge.36738/

I used the center column:  stacked papers, photo, foliage

Journaling reads:  Felling trees can be tricky business.  Mark is as careful as he can be when he is working on one.  He always makes sure no one is in harm’s way should the tree fall in a direction not intended even when he has it tied off in the direction he wants it to go.

This particular tree is 20” in diameter and stood about 65 feet tall, give or take.  He was able to get 6 usable 8 ft. lengths.  You can see how nice and straight the tree grew!

Now to run those 8 ft. sections through the sawmill.  1/21/23

Process:

I began with Anna’s template.

I replaced the background with papers from Joyful Heart, blending the top 2 and rotating them.

I hid all photo areas but the canvas I added the photo to.

I moved the template paints, texture, etc. around so the paper could be seen better.

All of the other elements were added from the kits by Anna.

Collect Your Own Moments

Collect Your Own Moments

Journaling reads:  I always love looking for the sunshine peeking through the clouds on a rainy day. It is a sign of hope that the rains will end.  It is God keeping His promise to never again send a global flood.  1/19/23

Process:

I began with a Quick Page.

I enlarged my photo beneath the QP to fill the opening.

I added text and the frame from the kit below the QP.

I added a cluster on top of the QP over the frame, hiding the frame included in the cluster.

I built up the cluster on the QP to continue around the bottom and up the right side.

I added the embellishment cluster to the top left.

I added the labels under the embellishment cluster.

I added the tree accent under the QP in the bottom left.

Journaling reads:  I picked Carolyn up at 10:30 and we went to Ilene’s where I heated up some potato soup for our lunch.  We ate dirt pudding in the afternoon.  And we played 4 games of Qwirkle.  I took Carolyn home at 4 due to a headache.  It went away after I took some Tylenol.

Conversation with an Eight Year Old

Conversations with an Eight Year Old

Done for the Use it All Designer Challenge found here:  https://oscraps.com/community/threads/use-it-all-challenge-with-karen-schulz-january-2023.36802/

Journaling reads:  My oldest daughter had a mother/daughter talk with her daughter.  It went like this:

“I had the sweetest conversation tonight with my girl. She started talking about what it was like to have babies. Lots of questions, funny and serious. “What if I poop on the table?” is always a fun one!   She wants me to be in the room with her and hold her hand and daddy can wait in the car but I can call him with all of the news. Then I can sleep in the bed with her and her new baby and we can go shopping together as soon as we go home.   I asked her “what about your husband?” and that started the sweetest conversation about her wedding and wanting to wear my wedding dress and just ‘having’ to see it right now. So we got it out and talked about the veil and kisses and my wedding jewelry she can’t wait to wear.

I know lots of things will change as she gets older and has her husband’s opinions to consider but it was such a joy to share in her dreams tonight. At her young age of 8, she gets me! Her heart is blossoming and it is so beautiful to witness first hand. I’m praying the Lord is preparing her future husband right now! He will be one lucky guy!”

I blended all 3 papers together using Liner Burn.  I duplicated the film strip to make the bigger frame and changed the color of the frames.

Remember When

Palette Challenge #1 found here:  https://oscraps.com/community/threads/january-challenge-1-color-palette.36842/

Remember When…..because every picture tells a story

Journaling reads:  The weather had been frightful so we gathered at Elisabeth and Brad’s home for our belated Christmas family gathering.  We postponed it so that Nathanael and Sam could be in attendance.  It was so nice to have all of my children in one place at the same time.....a rare occasion, indeed! The only two who were not able to come was Michael and Kara, my first and third grandchildren.  K was away visiting friends for the month of January and I am sure Michael was working.

I always try to get a group picture because it amazes me how much the kids change and grow from gathering to gathering.  Before we know it they will be starting families of their own, but I hope that doesn’t happen too soon!  I’d like for them to stay just the way they are (for the most part) for now!

Thank You, LORD, for the wonderful family You blessed me with!

Hello January and The Truth

Hello January

Journaling reads:  May you have warm words on a cold evening, A full moon on a dark night, And the road downhill all the way to your door.  - Irish Blessing

I took a picture of this moon on Jan. 6th while we were down at the fire pits and I thought of this Irish Blessing I had used on my siggy.  So, I added the cup of coffee for the “warm” in the blessing.  I liked the pocket card and added it since my picture is of God’s creation.

The Truth

Journaling reads:  Truth is like the sun. You can shut it out for a time, but it ain't goin' away.  –Elvis Presley, American singer (1935–77)

The squares along the side represent the sun in and out from behind clouds which sometimes block out the sun totally, but not for long!

Hope

Journaling reads:

1 My hope is built on nothing less

Than Jesus Christ, my righteousness;

I dare not trust the sweetest frame,

But wholly lean on Jesus’ name.

Chorus:

On Christ, the solid Rock, I stand;

All other ground is sinking sand,

All other ground is sinking sand.

2 When darkness veils His lovely face,

I rest on His unchanging grace;

In every high and stormy gale,

My anchor holds within the veil.

3 His oath, His covenant, His blood,

Support me in the whelming flood;

When all around my soul gives way,

He then is all my hope and stay.

4 When He shall come with trumpet sound,

Oh, may I then in Him be found;

In Him, my righteousness, alone,

Faultless to stand before the throne.

"My Hope Is Built on Nothing Less" is a Christian hymn written by Edward Mote, a pastor at Rehoboth Baptist Church in Horsham, West Sussex. Mote wrote around 100 hymns, this one, which he wrote in 1834, being the best known of his.

Hello Winter

Journaling reads:  I ordered some new puzzles from Christian Book Dist.  I decided to work the smallest one first.  Mark helped separate the pieces then put the bottom border together before he went to watch football.  I am a night owl and stayed up until 3 to finish the puzzle!

I blended a portion of the puzzle into the background.
