Sweet Doll August Challenge

National Watermelon Day

I didn't know there was such a thing as National Watermelon Day until I opened my Farmer's Almanac email this morning. Did you know of it? Here's one place you can read about it:  Days of the Year

When I think of watermelon I always remember the time as a kid that we, as a family, had watermelon one particular summer day when we lived in College Corner, Ohio. I remember eating LOTS! In fact I ate so much that day that I wet the bed that night!

My favorite watermelon memory, however, is a visual one in a picture my husband took of our son, Michael, enjoying a huge slice of watermelon when he was about 4 years old. At least that is the age he looks to be to me in the picture. That would make the date the summer of 1985. We had moved to a huge farmhouse on Kilby Road in Harrison, Ohio in May of that year. Michael turned 4 on June 9th eleven days before Nathanael was born later that month on the 20th.

It was a great place for the kids to play outside. I'm sure I "ran" the kids outside to play while I was busy with cooking, cleaning, taking care of a newborn, yada yada yada.....sometimes forgetting to periodically check on them to make sure they were staying out of trouble. It was probably on one of those occasions that Michael got himself into some trouble by throwing rocks through the windows of one of the out buildings on the property. I don't remember how my husband found out about the windows, but he took Michael next door to where the owner lived and made him apologize. I don't remember what other consequences there were. I'm sure Michael remembers!

We ate a lot of watermelon when I was a kid. We ate a lot when our kids were growing up, too. Now, I'm not so fond of watermelon. I have to be in the mood for it, which is rarely ever. But after reading about the health benefits today, I should probably eat more of it! Nah! I'll pass!

Back to Michael's watermelon. Michael looked so cute eating that huge slice of watermelon. The rind was probably big enough to wrap around him when he was done eating. You can see by the juice all over his face and dripping off of his chin and running down his arms and dripping off of his elbows that he was enjoying it! I had to create a scrapbook page to commemorate today and to reminisce about days gone by. Thanks for coming along on the journey!
